Emergency Airway Management at the Front Door

Summary:

This course takes advantage of the high-fidelity simulation facilities (at Cardiff University’s EMAC education suite), with small group teaching of just 3 delegates per group (to achieve tailored teaching) from highly skilled and experienced faculty (with years of experience of performing and leading intubation in both Emergency Departments and the pre-hospital environment).

The overall aim of the Emergency Airway Management (EAM) at the front door course is to support emergency physicians in delivering high quality advanced airway management and delivery of an emergency anaesthetic as part of the resuscitation of patients in the Emergency Department (ED). By completing this course, you will develop your laryngoscopy and intubation skills, as well as learning modern techniques in the delivery of an emergency anaesthetic for your patients in your resus room.

This blended learning course has been carefully designed to with pre-course eLearning to be completed in your own time, with a one-day face-to-face component and a post-course eAssessment (open book) to demonstrate your learning.

Course content has been created in alignment with Royal College of Emergency Medicine curriculum and European Society of Emergency medicine recommendations for emergency airway management in the ED.

Topics covered include:

  • Techniques of RSI and DSI – choosing the right drugs for the job
  • Managing the heavily soiled airway – SALAD technique
  • Use of hyperangulated blades in laryngoscopy
  • Intra-cardiac arrest airway management
  • Mechanical ventilation and post intubation sedation
  • Optimising prior to and during laryngoscopy
