Event summary

This event will examine the ways in which we can care for our patients, our colleagues and ourselves when we encounter violence and aggression in and around the ED. We will discuss the legal aspects of care and violent assault, the safeguarding implications of violent behaviour and the clinical management of the acutely disturbed patient, and hear of some innovative techniques to reduce violence in the workplace and some of the latest research in this area, plus the ground-breaking work of the violence reduction unit and how the NHS can support this work to reduce violence in our communities.

Learning objectives

• To understand the problem: How much violence and aggression do our staff experience and what is the effect of this?
• To understand our legal obligations when treating those patients who present as a result of violent crime, and those who may be perpetrators.
• To learn about the NHS violence reduction standard and the Assaults on Emergency Workers(offences) Act 2018.
• To gain an understanding of strategies to reduce violence in the ED
• Preventing, coping and dealing with violence and aggression: an occupational health perspective. Understanding how we might recognise and manage risk on a personal, departmental and trust level.
• To improve understanding of our safeguarding responsibilities when caring for those involved in or with violent and aggressive behaviour.
• To understand how the NHS can work in partnership to reduce violence in our communities
