The pleural procedures guidance and thoracic ultrasound course will provide emergency medicine physicians with hand-on practical training on performing pleural procedures safely in the ED. The practical sessions are underpinned by interactive case based discussions on safe decision making process required and the human factors that may affect any decision.
Learning objectives:
- Perform safe pleural procedures in emergency department
- Develop decision-making powers to undertake pleural procedures in the emergency department, when indicated
- Develop the psychomotor skills and knowledge to undertake pleural procedures quickly and safely
- Develop the confidence to oversee and mentor colleagues while conducting pleural procedures
- Introduction to thoracic ultrasound as per RCEM 2021 curriculum on expansion of lung scanning

GMC domains: 1, 2, and 3

The course is suitable for consultants, higher trainees and senior SAS doctors in emergency medicine, internal medicine and respiratory medicine, and ACCS trainees.
