The Royal College of Emergency Medicine has congratulated the Labour Party on winning the General Election and urged them to act immediately to address the UK’s A&E crisis if another ‘disastrous and dangerous’ winter is to be prevented.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has been appointed as Prime Minister following a meeting with The King earlier today (Friday 5 July 2024).
It is understood he will now form his cabinet, which will hold its first meeting tomorrow.
Addressing the country from outside Number 10 Sir Keir focused on service and renewal and promised a political reset.
Reacting to Labour’s victory, Dr Adrian Boyle, RCEM President said: “We offer our congratulations to Sir Keir Starmer and to the Labour Party. The size of the majority with which they won the election is a clear indicator that the public want action and change.
“Labour has already indicated that it intends to address the issues within A&Es as well as the wider problems caused by lack of hospital bed capacity. And we very much share the Prime Minister’s desire to rebuild and renew, and to get the NHS back on its feet.
“We urge him, and his government, to action these ambitions as soon as possible to help avert another disastrous and dangerous A&E winter crisis.
“We must also congratulate the Liberal Democrats on their success in yesterday’s election, and for their unwavering commitment to highlighting and campaigning for improved health and social care. And we thank the former administration for engaging with the College during its time in office.
“We look forward to working with members of the new parliament to achieve our shared aim of resuscitating Emergency Care, so our members and their patients get the health system they need and deserve.”
