Medical complications in pregnancy represent the leading cause of death in pregnancy. This event will cover the investigation and management of the common life-threatening problems including cardiac disease, neurological disease and maternal collapse. It will focus on the initial management, with emphasis on case-based discussion tailored to the EM curriculum.
The learning objectives of this event are:
- To recognise life-threatening medical conditions in the pregnant women
- To discuss investigation and management of commonly presenting medical problems in pregnancy (chest pain, shortness of breath, seizures) thorough case-based discussion
- To gain confidence regarding safety of radiological investigations and drugs in pregnancy
- Sign-post to relevant evidence-based guidance
- Use simulation to cover the approach to maternal collapse
