We have introduced updates to our examiner regulations. These regulations will apply to all new and existing examiners, and we will contact all current active examiners who have indicated their desire to continue examining from 2026 onwards to confirm their examiner role.

Roles

There are a number of different examiner roles, depending on your experience level and membership type and a number of other eligibility criteria.

  • MRCEM Primary SBA Writer
  • MRCEM Examiner (Resident Doctors in Training)
  • MRCEM Examiner (UK)
  • MRCEM Examiner (International) – examiners based overseas
  • FRCEM Examiner

Activities

There remain a number of different activities that you can get involved in as an examiner. What you can take part in as an examiner differs slightly depending on your examiner role, this is to ensure we are maximising the opportunity to get involved as an examiner from activities such as item writing, to quality assuring, to examining. The breakdown of which role can support in which activities are as follows:

Anyone wishing to become an examiner will be required to meet the requirements outlined in the ‘Eligibility Criteria’. The College welcomes applications from individuals who meet the eligibility criteria. Full details of the roles and responsibilities of each type of examiner, as well as the person specifications, are available in the Examiner Regulations. Once you have read the regulations, and confirmed you meet the requirements, please click the link below to submit an application.

The information you provide in the form will be used to inform your examiner role, so please ensure the information you provide in the form is accurate and current. Our Exams team will review your application and may ask you for more information if anything is missing or unclear. Once your application is confirmed and your references have been reviewed, you will be invited to attend workshops for the relevant activities linked to your role.

Upcoming examiner training

New examiners who have already been approved, but need to attend training, should attend a new writer training day before taking part in each examining activity. Dates for workshops and training sessions can be found in the table below. Please click ‘Register your interest’ if you would like to be contacted about training days. Examiners will be contacted to attend workshops depending on their role.
