RCEM supports Academy call to protect and promote clinical research across the NHS

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) strongly supports the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Academic Leads Committee (AALC) Position Statement on Clinical Research, which highlights the essential role of research in improving patient outcomes and calls for urgent action to reverse the decline in clinical research activity across the NHS.

The statement, endorsed by Medical Royal Colleges across the four nations, urges governments and healthcare leaders to strengthen infrastructure, invest in research-active staff, and ensure all patients can benefit from research opportunities.

Professor Matt Reed, RCEM Chair of Research, said: “Clinical research is the engine that drives better care for our patients.

“In Emergency Medicine, where rapid decision-making saves lives, embedding research in everyday practice is vital. We must create the time, space, and support for clinicians to lead and deliver research across the NHS.

“RCEM joins fellow Colleges in calling for renewed national commitment to protect and grow the UK’s clinical research ecosystem.”
