RCEM Responds to Lord Mann report into antisemitism and other forms of racism in the NHS

4 June 2026

Dr Ian Higginson, RCEM President, said: “Lord Mann’s report into antisemitism and other forms of racism within the NHS brings welcome renewed focus on this topic which is of considerable to concern to many of our members.

“Every member of NHS staff and every patient has the right to be treated with dignity, respect and compassion, free from discrimination, harassment and prejudice. Racism in all its forms has no place within healthcare, and action to address racial discrimination must benefit all communities affected by racism and inequality.

“There should be no hierarchy in how racism is recognised, addressed or challenged with all forms of racism must be taken seriously and responded to with equal commitment and determination.

“RCEM supports measures that strengthen accountability, improve education, promote inclusive cultures, and address the inequalities that continue to affect both patients and healthcare professionals. We recognise that discrimination harms staff wellbeing, patient experience and ultimately the quality and safety of care.

“As a College, we remain committed to advancing equality, diversity and inclusion within Emergency Medicine and to working collaboratively with NHS organisations, regulators and professional bodies to tackle racism, reduce health inequalities and ensure that Emergency Departments are welcoming, inclusive and safe environments for all staff and patients.”
