Bashir Hussain Fund for international emergency medicine education and leadership development

A new scheme to support the development of Emergency Medicine (EM) in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC), and low resource settings is being supported by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.

RCEM’s current Global EM Committee Chair and former President, Dr Tajek B Hassan (serving from 2016 – 2020) who has strong roots in EM in Pakistan, has, along with his family, established the Bashir Hussain Fund in memory of his late father. RCEM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to help support the work.

It is envisaged that this restricted fund, which is administered under the oversight of an RCEM appointed board, will be dedicated to advancing EM education and leadership in Pakistan and across South Asia through collaborative grants with academic institutions for fellowships, simulation training, and educational projects, in partnership with local charities. Further details of this process will be published in the near future.

The initial launch of this fund marked the 25th anniversary of Bashir Hussain’s passing and is supported by a £10,000 donation raised by Taj and his family, who will continue to support going forwards in future years. The family is very grateful to those friends and colleagues who would wish to donate to the Fund to support projects in the future.

“He had a seismic multigenerational impact on the family with his vision and passion for education and supporting those who were less well off in life,” said Taj. “A life spent driving buses in Birmingham did not dim his commitment and inspiring them to want to help others and we feel this fund goes some way to honouring that passion.”

Over time, the Fund also aims to contribute to addressing health inequalities within the UK. This initiative complements the College’s wider global engagement work and invites support from colleagues committed to advancing emergency care in low-resource settings.
