CCT Date Calculation

RCEM’s CCT Emergency Medicine Training Calculator supports Training Programme Directors (TPDs) and trainees in calculating a prospective CCT date.

When using the CCT Calculator you will need to enter post dates and any other periods outside of training, for example:

  • Out of Programme (OOP) Leave
  • Maternity Leave
  • Sick Leave

Important Update – Effective 1 August 2025

From 1 August 2025, LTFT training time should be calculated using the 10% block system based on average hours worked, not contractual Whole Time Equivalent (WTE), as per the Defining Fulltime guidance

If you are completing the calculator retrospectively, you must apply the correct system depending on the date of training being recorded. If it is prior to August 2025, then your wholetime equivalent (WTE) percentage should be applied.

Completing the Calculator

Step 1: Enter Completed Posts (Retrospective Entries)

Training undertaken before 1 August 2025

When documenting training already completed:

  • Enter your contractual Whole Time Equivalent (WTE).
  • This is the contractual Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) percentage agreed with your deanery (e.g. 80%, 60%).
Training undertaken from 1 August 2025 onwards
  • Enter your training time percentage based on average hours worked, using the 10% block system outlined in the Defining Fulltime Training guidance.
  • This is not based on your contractual WTE.
  • It is based on your average weekly hours worked

Step 2: Understanding the 10% Block System (From 01 August 2025)

Training time is categorised according to average weekly hours worked, in 10% blocks.

  • Full-time training is defined as 40 hours per week according to the block system.
  • Your contractual WTE may differ from the percentage you enter in the calculator after 1 August 2025.

Step 3: Projecting your CCT date

To calculate your projected CCT date:

  1. Enter all completed posts retrospectively, using the correct system based on date.
  2. In the “Training Time (%) of Next Working Post” field, enter the percentage based on the block system, if after 1 August 2025.
  3. The calculator will automatically generate your projected CCT date.

Worked examples

Example 1

A trainee working at 80% whole-time equivalent (WTE) and averaging 40 hours per week in June 2024 should enter 80% in the calculator for that rotation.

If the same trainee continues to work at 80% WTE and averages 40 hours per week from August 2025 onwards, they should enter 100% in the calculator.

This reflects the percentage of training time based on average hours worked, rather than the contractual WTE percentage.

Example 2

A trainee due to start their next post in August 2026, working an average of 32–36 hours per week, should enter 80% in the “% of next working post” field.

This applies even if the calculated percentage differs from their contractual WTE.

The percentage entered should reflect the average hours worked, as this determines the projected CCT date.

Key principles to remember

  • Before 1 August 2025 → Use contractual WTE
  • From 1 August 2025 → Use average hours worked (block system)
  • Only the meaning of the percentage field changes from 1 August 2025
  • Calculations should be confirmed with your Deanery at ARCP

If you are unsure which percentage to enter, please review the block table above and confirm your average weekly hours before submitting your calculation.
