New Poster Makes Entrustment Levels Easy to Understand

28/08/25

“Entrustment levels are essential—but they don’t have to be confusing.”

That’s the message behind a new RCEM educational poster and video designed to support trainees and assessors to understand workplace-based assessments (WBAs).

Created by Dr Rajesh Vasiraju, an EM Consultant, the graphic and its animation (below) offer a clear, visual explanation of entrustment levels to support accurate and consistent assessments.

“I wanted to create something that would make the concept of entrustment levels instantly relatable and easy to remember,” says Dr Vasiraju. “By blending clinical supervision with a bit of visual storytelling, my hope is that this poster helps demystify what can often feel like a complex framework.”

Dr Vasiraju’s motivation came from attending Annual Review of Competency Progressions (ARCPs) as both chair and panel member and finding that entrustment levels were often misunderstood and incorrectly assigned.

“Some assessors, including those from other specialties and even within Emergency Medicine, were unintentionally misapplying the levels,” he explains. “There’s a real need to simplify the language and presentation so that everyone, regardless of background, can use them correctly.”

Richard Parris, Chair of RCEM’s EM Leaders sub-group, commented: “Dr Vasiraju has transformed a complex clinical supervision framework into a visually engaging and easily digestible guide.

“His ‘Entrustment Levels Made Easy’ poster is not only informative but also cleverly designed to resonate with trainees and supervisors alike, making it an excellent educational tool in Emergency Medicine.”

Dr Vasiraju is an Emergency Medicine Consultant at Watford General Hospital with an interest in Medical Education. He is also a Clinical Educator, Educational Supervisor, Clinical Supervisor, ACP Lead and an ACCS EM stream TPD for the East of England Region.
