The College’s Emergency Medicine Specialty and Specialist (EMSAS) Doctor’s forum is proud to launch a practical and comprehensive guide to support the Emergency Medicine SAS workforce.
Titled the ‘EMSAS Handbook’, the document addresses the unique challenges faced by SAS and Locally Employed Doctors and provides essential information, guidance, and useful links to help them navigate their chosen career field.
Published in May, the handbook covers a broad range of topics including:
Each chapter has been written by experienced EMSAS colleagues whose aim was to inform and share knowledge, along with real world advice, to empower members and their colleagues.
EMSAS Chair, Dr Jocelyn Brittliff, said: “SAS and locally employed doctors constitute a significant portion of the Emergency Medicine workforce – often described as the backbone of the ED.
“It is essential that these clinicians receive both the opportunities and support necessary for their ongoing professional development.
“We are therefore proud to produce this handbook which should be essential reading for these doctors. It aims to guide, empower and develop their careers in their chosen field, as well as those who are considering becoming an EMSAS doctor to inform their journey.
“Each chapter contains a wealth of information, carefully written and curated by current and former EMSAS executives and representatives. And I would like to thank them, and everyone, who has contributed to the publication of this vital resource.”
RCEM President, Dr Adrian Boyle, said: “This is a fantastic piece of work and will be an invaluable resource for SAS doctors or anyone considering becoming one.
“My thanks go to Jocelyn and the EMSAS team who have put so much work and effort into producing the Handbook.
“The contribution that SAS doctors make to our specialty and across the medical workforce cannot be underestimated – it is no exaggeration to say out departments would not work without them.
“It is vital that they are provided with every opportunity to develop and progressing in their careers and RCEM is committed to supporting that.”
