RCEM announces next President

Friday 17 January 2025

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine has appointed its next President.

Dr Ian Higginson, who is currently one of the College’s Vice Presidents, will take over from Dr Adrian Boyle in the autumn.

Dr Higginson was the only nomination for the position and his appointment was ratified at the College’s Council meeting on Thursday 16 January 2025.

He now becomes RCEM ‘President Elect’ until he officially takes over from Dr Boyle at the College’s Annual General Meeting.

Known as an outspoken advocate for the specialty, he featured heavily in news media advocating for the EM workforce over the ever-challenging winter period, and has led some of RCEM’s most progressive policy initiatives with a particular focus on crowding, workforce and standards.

A qualified GP and Emergency Physician, with an interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, he brings a wealth of knowledge to the role. He has contributed to Emergency Medicine training and through Plymouth University has an academic and teaching practice in clinical leadership and professionalism.

Looking ahead to his Presidency, Dr Higginson said: “As a College, our ‘big ticket’ challenges are crowding and workforce, along with promoting sustainable training and working practices for clinicians in Emergency Medicine. “

“We must be the ones defining the standards, scope and nature of our work. You can expect strong advocacy. We’ve got to progress key topics such as practising environmentally sustainable EM, improving workplace culture and tackling violence and aggression within Emergency Departments.

“Finally, we need to make sure that our College remains modern and relevant to our members, and in the wider professional landscape. Looks like I will be busy!”

Gordon Miles, Chief Executive Officer of RCEM said: “On behalf of the College, I congratulate Dr Ian Higginson on his appointment as President-Elect and welcome him to the role.

“I look forward to collaborating with him when he assumes office later this year at our AGM as the College’s eight President.

“Dr Higginson brings an innovative approach and a deep passion for Emergency Medicine, which will be invaluable as we navigate the severe pressures facing Emergency Departments.

“His strong commitment to education and learning, combined with extensive experience in clinical quality, will play a pivotal role in driving excellence in emergency care.

“I am excited to support Dr Higginson as he leads the College into this next chapter.”

Until his official appointment at the College’s Annual General Meeting in Autumn, Dr Higginson will continue to work alongside the current President Dr Adrian Boyle, as President-Elect.
