In response to the General Medical Council (GMC’s) release today (Thursday 26 September 2024) of resources to support survivors of sexual misconduct by doctors, RCEM President Dr Adrian Boyle said:
“We hugely welcome the release of these resources by the GMC to support the reporting of sexual misconduct in healthcare. It should not need to be said that people should be able to work in and receive healthcare without fear of being sexually harassed. However, misconduct does take place, and we know there is a long way to go in both society and health care to eliminate sexism and inequality. As a father of daughters, I encourage men to be part of the solution.
“We would encourage everyone to familiarise and share this guidance, which includes what constitutes sexual misconduct and how to raise a concern.
“We would also advise people to reflect on the power imbalances that exist in their own workplaces, that they themselves may benefit from – and how they can be addressed.
“RCEM fully supports all survivors of sexual misconduct.”
