RCEM responds to the government’s Spring Statement

26 March 2025

Responding to the government’s Spring Statement announced today (26 March 2025) President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, Dr Adrian Boyle said: “Heavily trailed announcements in the weeks running up to today statement means that there were little surprises, and even fewer details about how abolishing NHSE, reducing the size of the civil service, and cutting some welfare support will translate into improvements to frontline healthcare.

“The Chancellor’s pronouncements will have provided little reassurance, or cause for optimism, for our members and their colleagues who are still battling through yet another Urgent and Emergency Care winter crisis. And once again, the only mention of addressing the many issues our health service faces was related to cutting elective waiting lists which, while important, cannot be the single focus.

“More detail about the funding allocation was promised in the Comprehensive Spending Review, and we keenly await that; as well as the government’s Urgent and Emergency Care Transformation Plan and its long-term strategy which we hope will be set out in the NHS 10 Year Plan later this year.”
