Notes on reductions to subscriptions

  • The College uses the World Bank list of Low-Income Countries and Lower-Middle-Income countries to provide a reduced subscriptions to members based in those countries.
  • There is a 50% reduction for UK-based members working LTFT and earning less than £37,100 per annum. This has been amended for 2025 in line with the 2024 government uplift of 5%. The reduction does not include EMJ access which is calculated separately and is optional for members meeting the above criteria.
  • A membership ‘freeze’ is available for any member who is leaving medicine to undertake voluntary work or unable to work due to ill health. This cost is £20 (excluding the EMJ) to cover a period of up to 12 months.
  • New Parents Leave – Members on maternity leave are entitled to one membership subscription calendar year at no cost. This can be the year in which their new parent leave begins or may be applied to the following year if the new parent leave spans across calendar years. We also provide a period of membership at no cost for any periods of adoption or paternity leave greater than one month. A copy of the MATB1 Form (or equivalent) is required and only one reduced subscription can be claimed per period of new parents leave.
  • Retirement – The College considers, for the purposes of membership, a retired member to be ‘any member who is retired from NHS work and does not have a licence to practice.’

General notes on reductions to subscriptions

  • Members joining part-way through the year are charged a pro-rated amount beginning from the month their membership starts.
  • Refunds or adjustments to membership subscriptions due to changes in circumstances and the addition or removal of services will be based on months of the year. Refunds are not generally given to members upon resignation from the College. Refunds can be provided on a pro-rata basis if resignation is applied part-way through the year.
  • RCEM has been approved by HMRC under section 201 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1968. Fellows and Members who pay UK taxes can claim tax relief on membership subscriptions at the highest marginal rate of tax. Further information can be found here

Medics Money – Don’t forget  to reclaim tax on your subscription

  • You can reduce the cost of your subscription fees by up to 45% using the free tax rebate guide written by doctors for doctors that provides support on tax rebates and can be found here.

Overseas tax

  • For those who are accessing our paid for services online from India, there is a requirement from the Indian Government to pay the Online Information Database Access and Retrieval (OIDAR) tax. This means that if you are accessing any of our paid for services online such as exams, membership, or our online events, there will be an 18% surcharge added to the cost of the service we provide to meet our obligations to the Indian Government. This rate is set by the Government and the cost, while collected by us as a Royal College, is passed directly onto India and is beyond our control. If you require further clarification or information about OIDAR and how it applies to you or our services, please do not hesitate to contact us.
