Notes
- The College uses the World Bank list of Low-Income Countries and Lower-Middle-Income countries to provide a reduced subscriptions to members based in those countries.
- There is a 50% reduction for UK-based members working LTFT and earning less than £37,100 per annum. This has been amended for 2025 in line with the 2024 government uplift of 5%. The reduction does not include EMJ access which is calculated separately and is optional for members meeting the above criteria.
- A membership ‘freeze’ is available for any member who is leaving medicine to undertake voluntary work or unable to work due to ill health. This cost is £20 (excluding the EMJ) to cover a period of up to 12 months.
- New Parents Leave – Members on maternity leave are entitled to one membership subscription calendar year at no cost. This can be the year in which their new parent leave begins or may be applied to the following year if the new parent leave spans across calendar years. We also provide a period of membership at no cost for any periods of adoption or paternity leave greater than one month. A copy of the MATB1 Form (or equivalent) is required and only one reduced subscription can be claimed per period of new parents leave.
- Retirement – The College considers, for the purposes of membership, a retired member to be ‘any member who is retired from NHS work and does not have a licence to practice.’
General notes on reductions to subscriptions
- Members joining part-way through the year are charged a pro-rated amount beginning from the month their membership starts.
- Refunds or adjustments to membership subscriptions due to changes in circumstances and the addition or removal of services will be based on months of the year. Refunds are not generally given to members upon resignation from the College. Refunds can be provided on a pro-rata basis if resignation is applied part-way through the year.
- RCEM has been approved by HMRC under section 201 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1968. Fellows and Members who pay UK taxes can claim tax relief on membership subscriptions at the highest marginal rate of tax.

Overseas tax
- We are required to comply with tax regulations in certain countries where we provide services such as exams or events. In some countries there are no additional taxes levied on the services the College provides, however in others there can be a range of liabilities which must be paid.These taxes include, but are not limited to, digital services taxes, value-added taxes, or goods and services taxes that apply to online services such as exams, membership, or events.Where such tax obligations exist, it is the responsibility of the candidate or member to meet those costs. The rates are set by the respective governments and are beyond the College’s control. The College is obligated to collect and pass on these taxes in accordance with local laws.
