RCEM streamlines exam application process

Tuesday 6 August 2024

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) has announced a host of materials to support members as it updates and streamlines the eligibility requirements, without comprising standards, for sitting exams.

The changes, which will affect exams sat from 2025 onwards, come as the College launches a new three-year academic strategy aimed at removing barriers to learning and engaging with technological advances.

The changes, expanded upon here, will create a more simplified application process and reduce duplication of data entry when booking successive exams.

Candidates will have seven years to complete all MRCEM exams. After completing MRCEM, candidates will then have seven years to take and pass their first FRCEM exam, and seven years to complete FRCEM exams once they have passed their first FRCEM component.

Romana Moss, RCEM’s Director of Education said: “Streamlining the eligibility requirements and process for RCEM exams has been an important project for us.

“We know how hard candidates work to sit these exams and we hope these changes will make the process easier. We want candidates to know that we will be with them every step of the way and they are at the heart of the transformation work we are currently undertaking.”

To support the changes to eligibility the Exams Team will be hosting a webinar and releasing an interactive quiz to assist candidates with checking their eligibility before applying.

Changes will also be made to the Oversubscription Criteria used for allocating OSCE spaces, in recognition of the new seven-year exam window.

The date of the webinar and quiz will be confirmed before the first application window for 2025 exams opens in October.

The College will be releasing further guidance in the coming weeks but would encourage anyone with specific questions to contact exams@rcem.ac.uk.
