RCEM International EM Education & Leadership Grant

The RCEM Global EM Committee, supported by the Bashir Hussain Fund for education, is very pleased to invite applications from Emergency Departments (EDs) across Pakistan and for South East Asian Collaborative for Emergency Medicine (EM) countries for a transformational grant.

This grant, aimed at fostering global education and leadership among EM Residents, will empower institutionalised EDs to run high-impact resident-lead quality improvement, research and education competitions. This will drive excellence in patient care and global collaboration, and benefit EM.

The fund is also intended to provide grants for fellowships, educational initiatives, and support for simulation training and scientific conferences in EM for major centres in Pakistan. It will then widen this to South Asia, and in time consider projects for tackling health inequalities in the UK.

The sum of £10,000 was raised and donated by Dr Taj Hassan, Chair of the GEM (Global Emergency Medicine) Committee and RCEM Past President from 2016 to 2019, in memory of his father Mr Bashir Hussain. The fund will honour Mr Hussain’s vision and passion for education and supporting those who were less well off in life.

Successful applicant institutions will receive an institutional grant of £400 (Approx. Pak Rs 140,000) to support the delivery of a local Emergency Medicine Resident Competition over a six-month period (March to August 2026), with mentorship from the International Emergency Medicine faculty.

Projects must be Resident-led and cover one of the following domains: System design & triage, Clinical Research, Quality Improvement (QI), Education, Simulation, or Leadership Development.

The deadline for applications to the Bashir Hussain Fund is at 12 midnight (GMT) on Friday 31 March 2026 and can be sent to: globalem@rcem.ac.uk

Visiting Observer Fellowship Scheme

This is a scheme which offers short clinical observership placements within the UK National Health Service (NHS) to Emergency Medicine doctors from low-resource settings. Successful Observers are also invited to visit the RCEM UK Head Office.

Placements will last for four weeks around September/October 2026. During the attachment, the doctor is not given any responsibility and is not able to make clinical decisions or give clinical advice. The doctor will not receive or be required to obtain registration or a license to practice with the UK General Medical Council.

Judging criteria

We wish to make awards to the most suitable applicants who will be able to use their award to their own maximum benefit and, to an extent, to the benefit of the College’s global work.

The judging panel will take the following criteria into consideration:

  • Access and Opportunity: Priority will be given to applicants for whom such a visit to the UK would not typically be feasible.
  • Quality of Proposal: The strength and clarity of the proposal, including a succinct summary of the applicant’s professional interests and learning objectives, with a clear rationale for how this Fellowship may support the development of Emergency Medicine in their home country.
  • Impact and Implementation: A concrete and feasible plan for applying the knowledge and experience gained upon return to their home institution, including alignment with existing RCEM Global partnerships (where possible).

How to apply

Please send your completed application form, with all requested accompanying documents, to globalem@rcem.ac.uk  by Monday 2 March 2026.

Grants of £1,250 are normally awarded although in some extreme cases amounts above this may be considered if the rationale behind this is evidenced.  The Global Emergency Committee will review all applications and if successful confirm approval of the funds to support an international placement.

Longer term placements will be favoured due to the ability the building meaningful relationships in-country and in the interest of environmental sustainability.

Reflections of the 2022 successful Global Placement grant winner

Emma Gold’s placement was with the African Federation of Emergency Medicine (AFEM). AFEM is the BEC training credentialing body for IFEM for the African region. This is the most active WHO region in rolling out the BEC training. My role involved assisting in the logistical and technical support to countries that want to conduct BEC courses. I worked with the country focal point to support them through the credentialing process and facilitator progression. I manage the AFEM BEC training tracking database and have been strengthening the existing records of completed training.
