This on demand event explores how the humanities can enrich the practice of EM.

The programme promotes a more humanistic approach to care, considering not only clinical decision-making but also the lived experiences of patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals in the ED. Through discussion of the arts, philosophy, history, and narrative storytelling, the day will examine wellbeing, meaning, and moral reflection in emergency care. Cultural, social, and structural influences on health outcomes in the emergency setting will also be explored, highlighting how the humanities can support compassionate, reflective, and sustainable emergency practice.

Learning objectives:

  • Reflection on patient and clinical experiences in emergency care through art, literature, film and theatre
  • Deepen the understanding of the role of narrative in clinical communication and patient-centred care in the emergency setting
  • Recognise the value of creative expression in supporting patient and staff wellbeing in the ED
  • Enhance empathy, ethical awareness and reflective clinical practice by applying humanities-informed perspectives
