Video interview: New Professor begins embedding research into Emergency Departments

Friday 25 April 2025

RCEM’s new Professor Gordon Fuller has shared his excitement about developing a national research and clinical trials network to “embed research into every Emergency Department throughout the country” in a video interview with the College.

Professor Fuller will also support NHS clinicians in delivering high-quality research through the College’s collaboration with the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). He also wants to enhance research opportunities for trainees, advanced practitioners, and fellows in EM through the Trainee Emergency Research Network (TERN), and develop RCEM’s Incubator – established with NIHR to support capacity building and multidisciplinary career development in areas with a low critical mass of clinical academics.

Fuller, an Emergency Medicine (EM) Consultant in Sheffield and Senior Research Fellow at the Sheffield Centre for Health and Related Research (SCHARR) at the University of Sheffield, took over as RCEM’s Professor on 1 April 2025.

He will be working alongside Research Chair Matt Reed and Professor Virginia Newcombe, succeeding the previous RCEM Professor, Edd Carlton, who has completed his term and significantly contributed to the College’s research priorities.

Members will have the next opportunity to meet Professor Fuller and the Research Committee at the Clinical Studies Group face-to-face event on 9-10 September 2025 (location to be confirmed). Register your interest now.

Previous RCEM Clinical Studies Group meetings, led by Professor Jason Smith, focused on delivering the James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership’s top 10 Emergency Medicine priorities. The upcoming event will build on these previous meetings and serve a dual purpose. More details can be found in the event summary.
