+ Event summary

Join us for an inspiring day dedicated to advancing research in emergency medicine at the annual Research Engagement day.

This event is designed for researchers at all levels, whether you’re just starting out, looking to refine your skills, or eager to connect with peers in the field, this event will develop your knowledge and confidence in research.

This year, we’re diving into big and emerging themes in emergency care research, with topics that will shape the future of the specialty:

  • AI and its transformative role in emergency care
  • Leveraging digital data for innovation
  • Effective patient and public engagement in research

Discover opportunities for individuals or departments to get involved in new and innovative research projects. This is your chance to explore fresh ideas, connect with experts, and leave inspired to make an impact in the field.

Excitingly, we offer two opportunities to present your own research on the day:

  1. Submitting a research idea to our pre-grant ‘blue sky’ awards. If you have a research idea but need help to get started, we are offering project development funding to help. The top shortlisted submissions will be asked to present in person on the day.
  2. Submitting an abstract for a research project (big or small) that you have already completed. These will be presented on digital display during the event, with top abstracts being asked to present. We have prizes for the top abstracts.

Learning objectives:

  • To meet and network with other clinicians interested in emergency care research from around the UK
  • To understand how big data and AI can be used in and support emergency care research
  • To understand the importance of PPIE when working with vulnerable populations to ensure research is inclusive and impactful
  • To learn about studies in emergency care that are new or in development

Submission criteria

Abstracts can be submitted on a range of emergency medicine related research.

We are happy to accept published or unpublished work, providing that it has not been presented at another UK national specialty conference.

On submission of the abstract, the main author must ensure that they have the approval and a copyright assignment from any other authors and contributors involved in the work.

QIPs and Case reports are not eligible for submission.

Abstracts form a key part of research, with top submissions being invited to present either an oral presentation or a virtual poster at the Research Engagement Day (RED). Submit your abstract for the chance to present your research project on Thursday 24th April, with prizes available for the winning submissions.

The oral presentations will take place at RED event in London at Octavia House on 24th  April 2025. Successful applicants will be required to register to attend the event

Please find below some useful information to support your abstract submission.

Why submit?

Abstracts are an integral part of the RED symposium and allow you to disseminate and showcase your work to a national audience. Presenting your work can help to inform education and clinical practice, as well as providing personal development opportunities such as improving your presentation skills and enhancing your CV.

Top scoring submissions will be invited to present their work as a short lightning oral presentation and will receive a 20% discount on registration fees. Other successful applicants might be selected to submit their work as a digital poster to be displayed and rotated on screen at the venue.

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine is pleased to launch the Blue-Sky Research Development Award 2025, designed to support the early development of research in emergency care.
